Wacky Business Story Headlines

In this episode of Ask Ralph, host Ralph Estep, Jr. explores the wackiest business news stories that have made headlines. These stories remind us that entrepreneurship is full of surprises and that truth can often be stranger than fiction. The first story highlights the Million-Dollar Potato Salad campaign launched on Kickstarter in 2014. Zack Brown raised over a million dollars from thousands of backers for his simple potato salad recipe. While some criticized it as a waste of money, others saw it as a testament to the power of crowdfunding and the randomness of the internet. Next, Ralph discusses the Pet Rock phenomenon from the 1970s. Gary Dahl sold rocks as low-maintenance pets, complete with humorous instruction manuals. The idea became a cultural phenomenon, with millions of pet rocks sold and even a fan club. It demonstrated people's willingness to buy into quirky and unconventional ideas. The Iceberg Water business is another unique story. In 2015, a company called Iceberg Water began harvesting icebergs in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and selling the melted iceberg water at a premium price. People were willing to pay for this "pure" and unique water, showcasing the value found in unexpected places. Ralph then talks about the World's Most Expensive Hot Dog, created in a Seattle restaurant in 2012. Priced at $169, the hot dog included extravagant ingredients like Wagyu beef, foie gras, black truffles, and caviar. While most people would settle for a regular hot dog, some were willing to splurge on this culinary experience.
Lastly, Ralph discusses the Avocado Hand incident that gained attention in 2017. People were accidentally injuring themselves while trying to handle avocados, leading to discussions about safety warnings on avocado packaging. It served as a reminder that even the simplest things can become unexpected hazards.
